Product Description
Petitgrain (Citrus Aurantium) - This innocent and sweet scented oil causes considerable confusion because it shares its Latin name with Neroli. The reason for this is that the oil is extracted from the same tree (the Bitter Orange Tree). Neroli is extracted from the blossom of the tree whilst Petitgrain is extracted from the buds, twigs and young leaves. One of the main differences is that the oil yield from the blossom is miniscule hence Neroli Oil is extremely expensive whereas the oil yield from the leaves and twigs is much greater, hence Petitgrain is quite reasonably priced. Petitgrain like Neroli is widely used in perfumery with Petitgrain being a key ingredient in many colognes. Petitgrain is a balancing oil which relaxes the body whilst lifting the spirits. It has a particular affinity for the male psyche and can be extremely helpful for individuals feeling work pressure.
To many aromatherapy enthusiasts (myself included) oils have personalities as well as characteristics and I always consider Petitgrain to be like a “cheerful friend”. Undemanding, good to have around with the ability to lift the spirits. Unfortunately Petitgrain is rarely chosen as one of the key oils in aromatherapy training. It is a pity as it is an ideal oil for beginners as it smells good and it is so well balanced and delicately fragranced it never spoils a blend no matter how inexperienced the individual doing the blending.
Julies Professional Tip
Blend together Neroli, Orange Sweet and Petitgrain in equal quantities and then add a dash of Sandalwood to ground it. Use in a burner (or assuming sensitivity tests have been carried out first) use in the bath for the ultimate citrus experience. There is something quite magical about bringing all the elements of the tree together. Almond oil is my preferred base oil for massage.
