Product Description
Fennel (Foeniculum Vulgare) from the latin word Foenum meaning “hay” because of its fresh scent and its historical application as a tonic used in animal fodder for the most valuable beasts. It wasn’t just used as a tonic for animals, the seeds were chewed by Greek athletes and Roman Gladiators to give them strength and courage. Medieval herbalists used to hang sprigs across doorways for protection. Victorians used it to calm nervous tummies and clean the teeth (it is still a common additive in toothpaste).
A good aromatherapist will in my opinion consider these historical anecdotes and experiences when treating clients in the modern clinical environment. I certainly would include Fennel within the treatment regime of someone who is suffering from the very common condition of stress or someone who is weighed down by seemingly insurmountable challenges ahead.
Fennel can also be helpful for some clients in terms of soothing the peaks and troughs of the female cycle. It is also commonly used for massaging orange peel areas of the skin.
Being close to Newmarket I am also regularly involved in animal aromatherapy and I have had excellent results combining Chamomile with Fennel to calm horses and dogs prior to travel or competition.
Fennel has a wonderfully uplifting fresh aniseedy scent but its pungency can make it difficult to blend. It works well with most citrus oils particularly Lime and it also adds an interesting note to most of the familiar blends that include Lavender.
Safety Note
Use in small amounts, spot test carefully prior to massage and avoid for the first 6 months of pregnancy.
