Product Description
Cedarwood (Cedrus Atlantica)from the “tree of eternal Life” is of the most underused oils in the Aromatherapy portfolio. It has a deep, heady aroma with a hint of freshly chopped wood and crushed leaves. Its colour is golden and its texture is thick and viscous but without the sticky syrupiness that characterises sandalwood. Cedarwood has been treasured by almost every civilisation. Solomon’s temple was made of cedar wood as were the doors of the Egyptian tombs and even today documents of historical importance are still protected within the protective insect proof walls of cedar chests. Cedarwood doesn’t just preserve paper it has a protective preservative effect on the skin and its scent is long lasting, hence its historical use in skin preparations and perfume. It has an affinity with the respiratory system and is popular prior to bed after a hig pressure day. Cedarwood can in some instances work where Lavender or Chamomile fail.
Professional Tip
Cedarwood is a base note and fixative ie when blended with other oils it lengthens the life of the scent. It adds character and depth to any blend but works particularly well with Lavender. Cedarwood is inexpensive compared to the more famous base notes of frankincense and Sandalwood. I recommend that students who need to practice blending endlessly and carry out the maximum number of massages that they can substitute Cedarwood for Sandalwood. It enables them to gain maximum experience whilst staying within their budgets. My favourite blend with Cedarwood for the bath or the burner is Cedarwood, Bergamot and Green Mandarin with Bergamot making up the body of the blend.
SAFETY NOTE
Opinion is divided as to whether Cedarwood is safe in pregnancy. If in any doubt avoid.
